DVSAS - Shawnette
From Survival to Self-Expression: Telling Shawnette’s Story with DVSAS
At Coho Films, we’re committed to telling human-centered stories that amplify the voices of those who have overcome unimaginable obstacles. In partnership with Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services of Whatcom County (DVSAS), we had the honor of documenting Shawnette’s journey—a powerful story of resilience, creativity, and healing.
Breaking the Cycle of Abuse
Shawnette’s early life was marked by instability and fear. Growing up in an abusive household, she later found herself in a relationship that mirrored that trauma. Trapped in a dangerous cycle, she made the courageous decision to seek help.
Her life changed the moment she entered the DVSAS Safe Housing Program. From the moment a DVSAS advocate picked her up, she describes a weight being lifted—a glimmer of peace in an otherwise chaotic world.
Support That Empowers Transformation
DVSAS didn’t just offer Shawnette a safe place to stay. They provided her with clothing, transportation, emotional support, and the kind of stability that allowed her to start envisioning a future for herself.
Through advocacy, resources, and consistent care, Shawnette found the space to heal—and thrive. She began college, discovered her passion for creativity, and is now pursuing a career in art therapy, using her own journey to help others navigate their pain and find healing through self-expression.
Crafting a Story with Care
Filming Shawnette’s story required a trauma-informed approach—sensitive to her experiences and focused on preserving her voice and agency. Our team worked closely with DVSAS to ensure the video reflected not just the facts of her story, but the emotional truth of it: one of strength, growth, and the enduring power of support.
From quiet, introspective interview moments to artistic b-roll capturing Shawnette’s creative work, every frame was crafted to honor her courage and the incredible work of DVSAS.
